Tornado Information

Click here to read interesting facts about tornados.

Do you take cover when you get notification of a tornado warning?  Many times a tornado warning is issued and nothing happens. The people in our community get complacent and that is a very dangerous frame of mind.  Tornadoes can occur in almost any month of the year, although most occur during April through July, late in the afternoon or early evening. Ninety percent of our severe weather comes out of the west, south West and we are on the extreme western edge of Wayne County, This means that if severe weather is going to hit Wayne County, it will hit us first. It's important to educate everyone in your family on what the watches and warnings mean and how to react to them

A Severe Thunder Storm Watch means that conditions are right to produce severe thunder storms and that you should listen to the media and be aware of changing weather conditions

A Severe Thunder Storm Warning means that thunder storms are likely to occur and you should also be aware of the danger of lightning.

A Tornado Watch means that weather condition exist that could produce a tornado. Secure loose objects outside and determine where you family is in case of the need to take shelter.

A Tornado Warning means that a tornado has been spotted or that the National Weather service radar has detected the possible presence of one. You and the members of your household should take cover immediately. The "rule of thumb"' , is to go to the lowest floor and get as many walls as you can between you and the outside. If you have a basement, take shelter there, under the stairway or heavy furniture .If you don't have a basement, go to a small interior room such as a closet or bathroom.

Locally when there is a tornado warning issued for our area, the warning sirens will sound with a steady tone for 3 to 5 minutes. There is no "all clear" signal.

These warning sirens are tested the first Saturday of each month at 1:00 pm.
