In this section you will learn more about the Rouge River and how it impacts Plymouth Township.

You Live In A Watershed

A watershed is all the land area that is drained by a river system. The Rouge River Watershed is all the land that drains into the Rouge River. Today the watershed encompasses over 466 square miles, 48 communities and three counties.

What Watershed Do You Live In?

Major Watersheds in Southeast Michigan:

  • Huron
  • Rouge
  • Clinton
  • Raisin
  • Ecorse Creek

The Rouge River watershed is further divided into sub-watersheds. Plymouth Township resides in both the Middle 1 and Lower 1 sub-watersheds.

The Rouge River has been subject to many types of pollutants both from industry and the general public.  The effort to protect the River is increasing and we have seen improvements in the health of our River.  Public involvement is crucial for cleaning up our watershed so that the River may provide safe and healthy recreational activities for all families in the watershed now and in the future.
